In Louisiana, employees in every industry enjoy healthy air quality in the workplace — except for those who work in bars and gaming facilities. Bar and gaming facility employees in our state don’t enjoy the same basic right to a smoke-free workplace as the rest of us do. And they need their jobs just like you need yours.

But it is not just the employees that smoky bars and gaming facilities impact. Customers, entertainers and vendors who spend time in these environments, whether voluntary or not, are exposed to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.

We are very aware of the smell that gets in our clothes and our hair, but did you know that there are over 7000 chemicals that lead to that smell? Those chemicals cause very real, measurable, expensive and avoidable harm like asthma, lung cancer, emphysema, and other chronic diseases. We know that the related costs in both lives and healthcare costs are real, so why aren’t we doing more to eliminate it?
