Victory in Alexandria! A Louisiana city goes smoke-free.
For smoke-free supporters, Oct. 4 was a long but, ultimately, joyful day in Alexandria, La. On that day, friends, neighbors and smoke-free fans from around Central Louisiana donned their Let's Be Totally Clear t-shirts and packed the Alexandria City Council chambers for an official vote on an ordinance to make all Alexandria workplaces (including bars) smoke-free for all employees. When the Council voted unanimously to pass the measure, Ordinance 148-2011, the chambers erupted in applause and cheers.
It was an extremely important public health achievement in Louisiana and one for which smoke-free supporters are extremely grateful...
While this victory was worthy of a great celebration, the work is really just beginning. For those who would like to know more about the new ordinance, how to comply with it and what resources are available for those who are trying to comply, visit our new Alexandria support page here.
